5-Minute car checks
At Crescent Motoring Services, we understand that life gets busy. However, dedicating just five minutes to routine car checks at home can help keep your vehicle running smoothly and prevent unexpected issues. Here are some simple inspections you can perform at home:
Check Engine Oil Levels
- Why: Engine oil lubricates vital components which is really important.
- How: With the engine cool, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, then remove again to check the level. Ensure the oil is between the minimum and maximum markers. If it’s low, top up with the appropriate oil type
Inspect Tyre Pressure and Tread
- Why: Properly inflated tyres improve fuel efficiency and handling.
- How: Use a tyre pressure gauge to check each one, including the spare if you have one. Compare readings to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI, found in your owner’s manual or on the driver’s side door frame. Also, examine the tread depth; if it’s below 1.6mm, consider replacing the tyres. If you are unsure though, do pop in to Crescent Motors.
Test All Lights
- Why: Functioning lights are crucial for safety and legal compliance.
- How: With the car parked, turn on headlights, brake lights, indicators, and hazard lights. Walk around the vehicle to ensure all are operational. Replace any burnt-out bulbs promptly. If in any doubt though, pop in to see us.
Examine Window Wipers and Washer Fluid
- Why: Clear visibility is essential, especially in adverse weather.
- How: Inspect wiper blades for cracks or wear. Replace them if they leave streaks or miss spots. Check the washer fluid reservoir under the bonnet and refill if necessary.There’s nothing worse than not being able to see properly and the window blurred form weather and dead insects with nothing to wash them away!
Look for Fluid Leaks
- Why: Leaks can indicate underlying issues that may lead to costly repairs.
- How: After the car has been parked for a while, check beneath it for any puddles or spots. Different fluids have distinct colours and textures, which can help identify the source.
