Buying a used car - A Few Basic Points to Check
If you are not confident that you know what to check take somebody with you to view the vehicle who knows what to look for. Check the bodywork for dents and scrapes, also check that all panels are fitted correctly. Any faults could be costly to correct, so haggle or walk away. Are all of the tyres satisfactory, with no signs of uneven wear? If the tyres are worn out altogether you will need to ensure you can afford new tyres. If the tyres are worn unevenly it could due to mis-aligned tracking or possibly something more serious - such as a twisted chassis caused by crash damage and not repaired correctly. Do all the mileometer digits line up correctly? Is the car supplied with the old MoT papers so you can check to ensure the mileage recorded matches the figures displayed? If you suspect the mileage has been clocked, contact your local Trading Standards office (www.tradingstandards.gov.uk) and tell them about it. Get an HPI check (www.hpicheck.com) done. The HPI will show whether has any outstanding finance attached to it. It will also show if the registration is original plus you will see if the car has ever been involved in a major accident. Does the chassis number (sometimes found at the base of the windscreen on the passenger side) match the registration document? Also check the engine number, which is usually found on the engine block. Are all the keys available? There should be at least two keys, a spare and a master. If there is only one key be awarte that if you lose it you may have to have everything reprogrammed. |
